Spring is here which is the prefect time to start drinking those beautiful roses! Codorniu is the world's oldest and second-largest producer of bottle-fermented sparkling wine, known as cava, made by the traditional champagne method and it was founded in Catalonia, Spain in 1551. The Codorniu Brut Rose is made from 100% Pinot Noir grape grown in the Catalonia region of Spain. Catalonia is located in the southeastern portion of the country surrounding Barcelona. This sparkling wine is made from the traditional method with the secondary fermentation occurring in the bottle.

The Codorniu Brut Rose is a pale pink color. On the nose are aromas of bright red cherry, raspberry, banana peel, banana runt candy, wet stone minerality, sweet orange blossom, fresh strawberry, and white stone. On the palate are notes of ruby red grapefruit, sweet orange, ripe mango, banana peel, dried cherry, unripe raspberry, fresh lavender, and minerality for days! This wine was a VERY pleasant surprise and one that I hope you all will enjoy throughout the upcoming spring months.

Louis Guntrum Dy Riesling

The most northern winemaking regions of Germany straddle the 50th
parallel making it among the world’s coolest vineyards. Riesling makes
up twenty percent of Germany’s grape plantings. Rieslings vary in
flavor from dry to very sweet. The level of sweetness is determined by
the residual sugar that is left in the grapes after harvest. Later
harvests produce more sugar while earlier harvests produce less. The
levels of sweetness are known as the Pradikat levels which are (driest
to sweetness) Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese,
Trockenbeerenauslese, and Eiswein. The Louis Guntrum Dry Riesling is
sealed with a crew top and has an alcohol level of 12 percentage.

The
Louis Guntrum Riesling is a star bright pale yellow color. On the nose
are hints of tart peach, nectarine, peach blossom, steely minerality,
petroleum, apricot blossom, ripe apricot, tart pineapple, and diesel
fuel. On the palate are notes of ruby red grapefruit, key lime, meyer
lemon, honey, pear, sweet orange, ginger, minerality, tart peach, and
white flower. This wine finishes with screaming acidity! Can you feel
it in your cheeks?
Crios Torrontes is produced by José Lovaglio, the son of Susan Balbo.
Susan Balbo has produced a wider variety of wines than any other
winemaker in Argentina. Susana was also the first Argentine winemaker to
be hired as a consultant to make wine outside of Argentina. The label
Crios features a series of three connected and overlapping
hands, an image that represents Susana and her children. Crios actually
means offspring. This wine is produced from 100% Torrontes grape grown
in Cafayate, Altamira, and La Rioja vineyards. The Crios Torrontes is
sealed with a screwtop and has a 13.9% alcohol level.

The
Crios Torrontes is a pale green-tinged yellow color. On the nose are
aromas of peach pit, white pear, peach flowers, sweet orange rind,
pineapple, wet stone minerality, ripe nectarine, and sweet key lime
pie. On the palate ruby red grapefruit, Meyer lemon, wet river stone,
orange rind, white flowers, honeysuckle, white pepper, unripe nectarine,
and fresh peach. This wine finishes fruity and floral, but is dry.
Overall, one of my absolutely favorite wines!

This wine is a
wonderful partner with:

Valdinera Nebbiolo Rose

Spring
is here which is the prefect time to start drinking those beautiful
roses! The Valdinera Rose is made from 100% Nebbiolo grape grown in the
Langhe region of Piedmont, Italy. Piedmont is located in the
northwestern portion of the country and it is known for red wines made
of Nebbiolo and Barbera. This wine is sealed with a screw cap and has
an alcohol level of 13.5%.

The Valdinera Rose is a pale pink
color. On the nose are aromas of bright red cherry, raspberry, banana
peel, banana runt candy, wet stone minerality, sweet orange blossom,
fresh strawberry, and white stone. On the palate are notes of ruby red
grapefruit, sweet orange, ripe mango, banana peel, dried cherry, unripe
raspberry, fresh lavender, and minerality for days! This wine was a VERY
pleasant surprise and one that I hope you all will enjoy throughout the
upcoming spring months.

Some great food pairing ideas for roses are:

O'reilly's Pinot Gris

The O'reilly's Pinot Gris is produced by the Owen Roe Winery in Oregon.
Jerry Owen, on the the vineyard side, and David O’Reilly, who makes the
wine, have formed Owen Roe with a simple purpose: to produce excellent
wines from grapes grown and cultivated in the best vineyards in the
Pacific Northwest. These vineyards are in the Willamette, Mid-Columbia,
Yakima, and Walla Walla valleys. Each vineyard is contracted by the
acre, with strict controls on yields and vine development. The same high
principles are found in the winery. This particular wine is produced
from the Columbia Valley vineyards. Pinot Gris is better known as the
Pinot Grigio grape. The O'reilly's Pinot Gris is sealed with a natural
cork and has an alcohol level of 13.5%.

This wine has a golden
color with green hues. On the nose are hints of apple blossom, white
flowers, honeydew melon, ripe apricot, fresh cut red apple, sweet
orange, and fresh earth. On the palate are flavors of canned apricot,
red apple juice, mango, agave, overripe pear, wet stone minerality, lime
zest, and green apple blossom. The O'reilly's Pinot Gris finished
crisp with well rounded fruit flavors. The perfect Thanksgiving wine so
enjoy!

Dibon Cava Brut Reserve

It
is a an end of summer celebration and what better way to say goodbye to
hot summer days and hello calm fall evenings than a bottle of bubbly.
Cava is a Spanish style of sparkling wine produced using the traditional
champagne method meaning the secondary fermentation occurs in the
bottle. The majority of Cava is produced in Penedes, Spain which is the
region surrounding Barcelona in the southeastern corner of the
country. The Dibon Cava Brut Reserve is a non vintage or NV which means
the grapes are harvested from several different years. This sparkling
wine is made of three native Spanish grapes Macabeo (45%), Xarel-lo
(25%), and Parellada (30%).

The Dibon Cava Brut Reserve is a pale
golden color with green hues. On the nose were aromas of green apple,
peach blossom, crisp pears, unripe apricot, fresh baked bread, yeast,
white flowers, steely minerality, and meyer lemon. On the palate are
hints of sweet pink grapefruit, lemon blossom, tart green apple, unripe
peach, key lime, apricot, and sweet stone minerality. This wine had a
crisp, clean finish with ample acidity.
Pinotage is a cross between Pinot Nior and Cinsault red grapes. In 1925, Pinotage was created by Abraham Izak Herold in South Africa. Currently, Pinotage is only grown in South Africa and has become their "flagship" red grape. The Fleur du Cap winery is located in Stellenbosch, South Africa on the hillside of the ward of Papegaaiberg. Stellenbosch is South Africa's most prominent winemaking region dating back to the 17th century. This wine is sealed with a natural cork and has an alcohol level of 13.8%.

The 2010 Fleur du Cap is made from 100% Pinotage grape. This red wine is a rich garnet color. On the nose are aromas of ripe raspberry, black currant, mocha, blackberry, black plum, fresh cut wood, anise, and oak chips. On the palate are hints of dark chocolate, smoke, ripe blackberry, dark plum, cedar, espresso, black licorice, dusty forest floor, and fresh earth. This wine has a dry finish with ample tannins and acidity. The Fleur du Cap Pinotage is a GREAT wine for any individual that is interested in trying an unique red wine and spicing up their night.

What can I say?! I am a sucker for a pink sparkling wine! The opportunity presented itself to take home a bottle of the limited edition (only 1,700 cases were made) Contadi Castaldi Brut Rose. The NV (non vintage) Contadi Castaldi Sparkling Rose is produced in Lombardy, Italy located in the northeastern portion of the country. The exact type of sparkling wine is known as Franciacorta DOCG which is an Italian sparkling wine made in the traditional champagne style with secondary fermentation occurring in the bottle. This wine is fermented for a minimum of 18 months, but may not be released until 25 months after harvest. Only Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Blanc grapes are allowed in this sparkler. Castaldi has an alcohol level of 12.5% and is sealed with a natural cork.

The Contadi Castaldi Sparkling Rose is surprisingly not as rose in color as expected, but is a pale peach color with golden hues. On the nose are hints of fresh straw, sweet honeysuckle, sweet orange zest, ripe raspberry, toasted almond, unripe peach, tart blackberry, and minerality. On the palate are flavors of cassis, white pepper, mandarin orange, pink flowers, strawberry, fresh baked bread, slight cream, unripe apricot, lemon zest, and wet stone minerality. This sparkling wine finished with bright acidity and a soft fullness.

So I am a HUGE fan of Ghostbusters. I can quote almost every single line from both movies, but really, what self respecting person can't? With that being said I fell for it, hook line and sinker, the Gatekeeper Shiraz, how could I say no? The Charles and Charles Rose is the collaboration of Charles Smith and Charles Bieler two self proclaimed bad asses of wine making.

As spring approaches I can't help, but want a dry white wine to celebrate the seasons. The 2010 Giacosa Fratelli Roero Arneis is produced in the northern Italy region of Piedmont. This wine is made from 100% Arneis (a grape native to the region) which means little rascal. This wine was sealed with a natural cork and has an alcohol content of 12.5%.

The Giacosa Fratelli is a bright yellow color. On the nose were aromas of orange blossom, white flower, mandarin orange, Meyer lemon, wet stone minerality, perfume, mint, key lime, and ruby red grapefruit. On the palate were hints of ripe lemon, mint leaf, navel orange, wet river stone, peach flower, apricot, lime rind, and fresh cut rosemary. This white wine finished crisp with ample acidity. Overall, a delicious wine to drink on the porch while embracing the changing of the seasons.

For those of you who follow my wine blog, you know my wine choices are influenced by recent travels or vacations to come. Therefore, with day dreams of Southern Italy floating through my head I was inspired to buy the Stemmari Nero d'Avola. The 2009 Stemmari Nero d'Avola IGT is from the Southern Italian island of Sicily which I hope to be visiting soon! The Stemmari is a red wine made from Nero d'Avola grape, a native grape to Sicily. This wine was sealed with an artificial cork and has a 13.5% alcohol level.

The Stemmari Nero d'Avola is a rich garnet color. On the nose are aromas of unripe blackberry, currant, anise, cranberry, crushed red berry, red plum, violet, dried earth, fall leafs, and fresh cut cedar. On the palate are hints of unripe purple plum, cranberry, violet, forest floor, dried earth, red cherry, red licorice, and tart raspberry. This wine finished dry with tons of acidity and tannin. Overall, the perfect wine to inspire travels abroad.

The Stemmari Nero d'Avola would pair well with food items such as risotto, red sauce pasta dishes, ragu, venison, veal, lamb, pork, beef, and strong flavored cheese.
Amateur Hourhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05242710690224266053noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9022008041732874030.post-88278697574276920702012-02-15T13:52:00.001-06:002012-02-15T13:52:55.643-06:00The Mysteries of Chianti! 2.15.2012Chianti

Watch almost any romantic movie or go to any Italian restaurant and you will hear the word Chianti associated with a common, average red wine from Italy. However, in reality Chianti is anything but common. To prove it here are a few fun facts about the region and wine.

All Chianti is produced in Tuscany, Italy

70% of Tuscan vineyards are devoted to the
production of red wines

Sangiovese is the principal red grape of Chianti

Chianti is actually a DOCG. DOCG stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita which represents the best of Italian wine

The general recipe for Chianti DOCG requires 70-100% Sangiovese

The addition of the white grapes Trebbiano and Malvasia is now optional rather than mandatory

Riserva refers to how long the wine has been aged

Chianti has eight subzones: Classico, Rùfina, Colli
Fiorentini, Colli Senesi, Colline Pisane, Colli Aretini, Montalbano, and Montespertoli (each with their own allowed percentages of Sangiovese)

And the rules go on and on. So the next time you hear or see the word Chianti just remember it is anything but average. I was walking through the store, and realized I was in the mood for something alittle different so I went with a classic Spanish Albarino. The Burgans brand is owned by the very well known Bodegas Martín Códax is located in the Val do Salnés sub-zone. The winery was established in 1986 and is a cooperative of 285 members that uses only estate grown grapes for it's wine. This white wine is 100% Albariño grape. It was sealed with a screwtop and has an alcohol level of 13%.

The Burgans Albarino is a pale yellow color with aromas of lemon, ruby red grapefruit, ripe peach, mango, pineapple, fresh minerality, white flowers, and lime. On the palate are notes of lemon, orange jam, peach blossoms, white flowers, wet stone minerality, pineapple, unripe banana, and tart green apple. The finish is round yet acidity with a slightly savory personality. Overall, I absolutely loved this wine!
Amateur Hourhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05242710690224266053noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9022008041732874030.post-42052243679330360062012-01-20T21:08:00.000-06:002012-01-20T21:08:02.284-06:00Chilean Wine Fact 1.20.12

Wine Fact #1

Since it is a new year I decided to change things up just a bit. Oh don't worry, I will still be reviewing wines and posting all the wonderful aromas and flavors they have to offer, but now I will be throwing some wine information at you!

Chile

In 2011, the Chilean Ministry of Agriculture approved a new set of
geographical terms, based on east/west geography rather than north/south
geography. Now producers may use the designations Costa for coast, Entre Cordilleras for between mountains, or Andes to
reflect the proximity of their vineyards to the coast or the mountains.
These terms will be seen on the labels of wine bottles, as well as a minimum 85% of grapes must be grown in the listed
appellation if listed on the label of the bottle.
Amateur Hourhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05242710690224266053noreply@blogger.com0
